Picnic? Beach? Fireworks? There are TONS of things to do on the 4th of July. Surprisingly, most are low to little cost! In these times the word "staycation" is becoming increasingly popular. It is best to stay in town and support your local community events and BBQ at home! It's even better if you have a beach / lake nearby!
In my area, the City puts on a large concert and fireworks show on 4th of July at our largest park. There are free activities for the kids, great entertainment (we had the Atlanta Rhythm Section last year and have Tinsley Ellis and Eric Durrance this year), and a spectacular fireworks show to end the night. The website for my local event is HERE
A lot of mid-size to large cities have events like this, and if not they have something more quaint on a smaller scale. Events like this are great fun and usually cost nothing except for any food bought at the events.
If you don't have a locally organized event in your area, have a family BBQ and some personal fireworks. Make sure only adults are operating fireworks and your area hasn't prohibited fireworks due to dry weather. Use overage to buy your meat and fireworks. Publix has a lot of free after coupon deals this week that could cause overage. Include a $/$$ coupon for more savings! (I received a $5/$30 in the mail this week).
Remember, you can still have a great holiday and save money at the same time! Good luck and tell me how it goes!
If you're a local reader, come by Tom Brown Park on July 4th for Celebrate America! I'll see you there!
